Controlled retreat is possibly the most difficult battle maneuver to do well. And you're right, the IDF didn't train me in that either (in the early 80s). Ideally, you want people to train in covering each other from whatever cover they have while the others pull back, which is hard to do while keeping your gun pointed at the enemy who's likely in a better position and possibly outguns you.
