Credit card issuers actually still profit from "dead beats" because they collect the ~3% per transaction (less the small bit they pay Visa, Mastercard, etc.). They also have zero risk of default. They do make more on "revolvers" like your friends, but that doesn't make those of us who carry cards and pay in full each month a loss for them.
