For me too, the monetary rewards from Medium (especially now that they seem to have cut their baseline payout to about $0.01 per minute of member read time - a reduction of about 57%, and don't get me started on the reduction in visibility) is ridiculously low.
If I write directly for Medium, my financial "reward" is about 1/7000 of what I'm paid for my full-time-plus consulting work.
That's why I've pretty much stopped doing that (except for the very occasional piece that tickles my fingertips and just flows out). Instead, I write for another website, and then republish on Medium.
Even that other wesite's payment offers a fraction of my consulting rate, but at least that fraction is about 35%, or nearly 2500x higher than Medium. Then, I only need to count the hour or so it takes me to republish 6 monthly articles here, so my Medium hourly rate jumps up to a whopping 2% of my consulting rate.
Obviously, I do this because I enjoy writing and providing information and ideas to people. If it was for money, I'd be long gone from here.
