I think this aligns well with my thought that true wealth is being happy with what you have. If your soul is "empty," you can never be happy with what you have, no matter the number of zeros in your net worth number.
As for the reasons for accumulating (numerically sufficient) wealth, here are some in no particular order:
- It gives you the freedom to choose what you'll work on, when, how much, and with/for whom.
- It gives you options as to where you live.
- It provides safety (in most, though not all cases) if something bad happens.
- It makes it easier to travel and see the world, meet interesting people, and have the time to get to know them.
- It lets you support monetarily and/or with your time worthy causes you care about.
Too many people misquote the biblical verse as saying that money is the root of all evil. The correct quote is, "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils."
If your soul isn't empty, you may pursue money as a means to worthy ends. If you pursue money simply to have more money, you may well fall prey to those evils.
