I think we do that by developing noncoscious heuristics that disengage our thinking brain from what we do.

This has the great advantage that, in most things, it saves time we don't need to waste on thinking everything through.

However, as you noted, there are many aspects of life where such deeper thought can lead to insights we otherwise miss.
