I wonder if much of what we see in recent generations is (at least in part) because of how our generation, as parents, gave everyone "participation" trophies.

Yes, I know that showing up is 80% of what's needed to achieve important reesults, but dang, that last 20% should be celebrated when it's there. Celebrating everyone's 80% instead seems designed to reduce the incentive to outperform.
