I'd hazard that the far higher level of geographic mobility (compared to early human) has a lot to do with the situation you describe.

When we move across the country or around the globe for school and/or work, at best we have our spouse and kids with us. At worst, we're on our own.

And when we arrive at the new location, we often find that (most of) the locals have all the friends they need, and creating new close friendships is extremely challenging.

So above and beyond how patriarchy affects women (and men too), we simply don't have many close relationships around us as a buffer against life's challenges.
