In general, and especially before successive waves of Palestinian terror pushed more and more of the Israeli public rightward (which in Israel means hawkish on defense and foreign relations), the majority of Israelis would be willing to offer significant and painful (to Israel) compromises in return for a real and lasting peace.

Unfortunately, the other side has never shown its readiness to partner in such a deal.
