In the US, your deposits are insured by the FDIC up to $250k per bank, per account type, per ownership type (e.g., yours, your spouse's, joint, etc.).

If you keep large sums at the bank (likely not a great idea anyway - most of it should be invested!), having some of that money at another institution lets you double your maximum FDIC coverage.
