It depends on many things, especially where you live.

For example, renting a nice apartment in West LA costs over $3800 a month or $45.6k a year. Move a couple of blocks over into Santa Monica and the cost increases by at least 20%.

So, if that's where you live, then no, $77k a year is woefully short.

Of course, if you live in a small town away from any large metro area, your rent (or mortgage) might be less than a third of that, so $77k would provide a very nice returement.
