It is all too easy to be oblivious to our privilege, especially if it's always been there. If you've never been poor, you've never had to "walk a mile in the other's shoes."

Those of us whose parents came from poverty have a little better notion of how that impacts people, but even then, if we've never had to struggle, it's hard to get just how much attention the poor have to give every dollar.

Finally, even some of us who experienced a level of hardship, but were then fortunate (and hardworking) enough to get ahead, may fall prey to thinking it was all about our talents and hard work, not seeing that good fortune played a part too.
