One other thought, I think there's a big difference between what you can do, having had the opportunity (and the wisdom to take advantage of it) to earn very high income for many years relatively early in life; and what someone who never earned as much, and whose high earning years came relatively late in life can do.

If I was to avoid stocks and invest in bonds, I'd have to accept a much smaller net worth at retirement if I avoid risk assets.
