One thing that most employees never even think of is that when they work for an employer, they’re creating a lot more value than their compensation. The proof is simple. If this wasn’t so, they’d be laid off. Their employer is in the business of making money, not in the business of employing people. The employees are merely a means to the end of making money.

What this means is that even if your job is one that’s also your calling, you can (almost always) do better by hanging out your own shingle and capturing all that extra value that’s currently going to your employer.
