Personally, I prefer to take my rewards in cash, like with the Citi Double Cash card. Then, I put the reward money in a separate "Gifts and Vacations Fund" account.

The advantage is that we get to spend those rewards however we want, not locked into what the airline arranges, that's driven by what benefits them most.
