Said more succinctly, investments in the stock market have returned about 10% a year, on average, without accounting for inflation, and about 7% adjusting for inflation. That means you can use such investments to produce income if you have a large enough portfolio to live on about 4-5% of it annually. If you don't have that much, you can use those returns to build up your portfolio over time.
