I agree that as a society, we need to base our economy on a more sustainable footing, which doubtless needs to include some sort of carbon-footprint accounting, whether as a tax or some other mechanism.

Once that’s in place, we can all make the most informed choices about what we should personally do in our own enlightened best interest (which would at that point incorporate sustainability).

One thing I’d argue is that if people buy new and hold for 10 years, there will be a similar number of new vehicles being purchased per year by those people. That to me invalidates your argument against my suggested course of action. Had I suggested replacing with a new car every 5 years, you’d have been dead-on, but that’s not what I propose.
