I'd have agreed with you, but looking at Edmunds data, I see that comparing, e.g., the Tesla Model 3 Long Range to the hybrid Camry, the total cost to own (for the first five years) is almost half again as much for the Tesla, and even just the service and maintenance costs are higher for the Tesla.

I suspect this picture would change as the cars age, say in years 5-10.
