It’s true that the article is intended for people who are not in the lower few deciles of income. It’s also intended for the majority of people who, like me, don’t know how to do car repair and maintenance work themselves.

If you do have that sort of expertise, you’ll also know how to check out a used car you’re considering buying, and not overpay for something that requires major repairs and reconditioning.

That makes it a better deal to buy a good, reliable used car and drive it into the ground. For the rest of us, that’s not practical.
