I completely agree that it’s not your boss’s job to make you rich (though it is part of their job to not abuse you).

I also agree that reaching FI is up to you. Whether you do it by getting a high-paying job while keeping your expenses under control, getting a job that offers stock options and RSUs, starting a side hustle (or three), investing in rental real estate, starting a full-time business, or any combination thereof.

This article was intended to show through my experience that having a job (as the overwhelming majority of Americans do) isn’t an unmixed blessing. In the end, I was lucky enough to reach a point where I had to say “No more!”, had enough support and fortitude to launch my own practice, and had enough good fortune to make it successful.
