As for the 10 years, for me that's sort of a guideline, not a requirement, either to absolutely keep cars to that point nor to sell them at that exact point.

If a car is running great at 10 years old, I'd keep it until it starts giving me signifianct trouble. If it starts giving such trouble before 10 years, I'd consider selling it early.
