That's a very reasonable approach, and would reduce how much you need to amass. Say you want to retire on $100k and your writing is existed to bring in $30k, plus $30k from the SSA, then you'd only need your portfolio to throw off $40k a year. Depending on your strategy, that could require between $800k and $1.23M.
