However, the value of a 10-year-old car isn’t a huge factor. At the moment, a 10-year-old hybrid Camry would get you about $2900 in a trade-in, or $4200 if you sell to a private party.
That’s a nice bit of change, but in a 10-year calculation, it reduces the full cost of ownership by $290-$420 per year, which is about 5%-7% of the average annual cost of ownership for 10 years. It also works as well for both buying used or new, so doesn’t affect my main point, that buying new and driving for a long time is the way to go.
