There are many situations where renting makes more sense. However, I believe that most people who can afford to buy a home they'd want to live in, in a neighborhood they like, would be better off buying. If you run the numbers (which I did) you don't make a profit off most primary residences, but once you factor in the saved rent, you come out far ahead.
