There was a joint study on whether money can buy happiness conducted by the authors of the oft-quoted study that concluded happiness plateaus at $75k along with the authors of a study that debunked it.

What they found together was that happiness keeps increasing with greater income (albeit the difference in happiness level per extra dollar decreases). The exception was that there are people who are simply unhappy/depressed, and they stay that way no matter how much they make.

From my perspective, the best thing about having greater financial resources is that it gives you more control over your life and what you can/must do. It also gives you more options and a greater margin of safety in dealing with setbacks.
