Thing is, if your kid needs to see a doctor, you don't need cash for that. You need liquid resources, certainly, but I'd pay for that doc using a credit card (that I pay in full when the statement arrives weeks later). That way, I don't need to keep extra cash in a checking account where it loses >9%/year. Also, I get a nice 2% reward.
