This is so true.
When we were thinking of buying our current home, the price seemed outrageously high.
Not because we thought it wasn't worth it - we'd been looking for three years for something very specific, and this home was on the low end in price and high end in quality - so actually a great deal.
We just had a hard time wrapping our minds around buying such an expensive house.
Ultimately, we decided to go for it.
Now, the house is worth ~70% more, and our mortgage payment (having locked in a 3% rate) is less we'd have to pay to rent a 3-bedroom apartment in this market.
It's not all in the mindset - there are certainly realities that affect whether or not you can afford something in the here and now.
It's just that mindset can help you pursue changes that will expand what you can afford in the future.
