This is what happens when 90% of the members of the House of Representatives are elected in their party primaries rather than in the general election. They see their constituency as being solely the far right or left, as the case may be.
And since those furthest from the mainstream are most likely to be motivated by one sick ideology or another, and don't understand or care about the country being run properly, so long as their pet grievances are addressed, we come to this.
Also, since most decent and intelligent people steer clear of politics, or if they do pursue elected office are unlikely to win, we end up with far too many Reps who are incompetent, amoral, conspiracy nuts, or all of the above.
That's why things increasingly go off the rails.
The solution? Simple. SCOTUS should rule that gerrymandering is unconstituitional, and that no, corporations aren't people.
Of course, simple doesn't mean it'll get done. Too many powerful vested interests.
